The potential of cell-culture to help solve a variety of agronomic problems has long been recognized, but results have usually fallen short of expectations. The use of cell-culture techniques offers the greatest potential in a genus such as Musa, which is characterized by the large-sale planting of elite, sterile genotypes. To the degree to which it is applicable, conventional breeding of bananas and plantains results in the loss of critical agronomic or horticultural characters, marking it of limited value. The optimization of efficient regeneration techniques for this genus is necessary before cell-culture technology can be exploited. Fortunately, enough information is available to determine that efficient regenaration protocols are within reach for both bananas and plantains. Once such systems are in place, genetic transformation and in-vitro selection systems can be incorporated into the cell-culture protocols. |
